Pat's Art
"I'm not an artist."  My husband can quickly sketch and draw, which he has been doing since early childhood.   I can't do that .  I have not had experience.  I had always thought, "I am not an artist."

Shortly after we had moved to CA from WI, in spring semester 2002, we took a course in Photoshop, courtesy of Vista Adult School.  The instructor told us to bring in a photo and scan it to play with.  I chose this daffodil.  The results look rather artistic.

Maybe...I am an artist.

"Colorful Daffodils 3x3=9"

Both of these were printed on 11"x17" matte paper at Kinkos, then matted and framed with a narrow black frame.

The matte paper absorbed a lot of ink and I was surprised that they looked so much darker than they had on the computer screen, and detail had been lost.

I have tried to duplicate the end result here--compare the image on the right with the one above it.

They are hanging in my room, along with the one below.

In Wisconsin we lived in a unique house designed by Bob to incorporate solar heating with Wrightian principles--located on a naturally wooded lot.  When we planned to move to California, I took photos of the various wildflowers, ferns, tulips, and daffodils.

Although I could not bring any of the actual plants with me, I brought them with me in spirit, as these three photos remind me every day as I see them on the wall above my bed.

I am especially sentimental about the red tulips.  My grandfather was a devoted gardener.  During the winter, he poured over the seed catalogs and filled out the order forms, always trying several new plants each season.  I dug up one of his red tulips and planted the few bulbs in my wooded yard.  Over the twenty-some years we lived there, I kept separating the bulbs each fall until we moved--when there were hundreds of red tulips.

"So plant your own garden and decorate your own soul, instead of waiting for someone to bring you flowers...

And you find that you can endure, that you really are strong, and that you really do have worth."

I can't find the original photo.  The lily pads were gray and the water had some slimy stuff in it.  The colors of the lotus blossom on the print are less intense than appear on my monitor.

Why this quote and this photo for this woman?

I was attending a gathering of women at the home of a woman named Donna.  I commented to her that an area of one room reminded me of photos Bob had taken in Taiwan inside Buddhist temples.  Donna replied that she had been studying Buddhism for a few years.  I said the monochromatic print of a lotus blossom reminded me of some water lily pictures that Bob had taken in Taiwan.

A few minutes later, I heard Donna telling another guest that she would like to start a group to work through the book she was holding, and which looked familiar to me--"The Artists Way".  That night I found that book on Bob's shelves and started to read it, and on page 12, I found this quote which I thought suited Donna.
